There was no warning, just the sound of a sickening soft whack. The pirate's jaw banged into the back of his Steve's skull, pushing him forward, increasing even more the pressure of the knife on his throat.
Then the man relaxed his grip; letting him grab the limp hand holding the knife, pushing it away. Steven jumped to the side, ready to run, and half turned enough to see the man stumble forward, dropping down onto his knees. For a moment he knelt there unsteadily: verging between the conscious and unconscious. At last he shook his head, and looked up. He let out a terrible roar of anger and pain; stumbled forward groggily before standing up again. It was then that Steve saw Sarah, barely out of arm's reach of the pirate, half-frozen in terror. He had turned and seen her too, his eye's full of hate. He made a step towards her.
Sarah's arms were at her side; at last she shook off the look of petrified fear, as her hands came up together, fists clamped around an iron bar. Like a demented golfer she swung it back; arched around her body, then brought it forward, powered with every gram of strength she could muster.
The man was almost on her with his raised blade when the momentum of her swing drove the bar through his attempts to ward it off, and sank it deep into his stomach. It stopped him dead on his feet. The pirate folded forward, uttering a sickening howl; then stumbled backward towards the edge of the track, stopping only when he felt the loose ground under his heels crumble away.
The knife fell from his weakened grip to the loosened soil at his feet as he made a pathetic; and futile attempt to balance himself with flailing arms, as for a moment he looked at them. Then the ground he stood on gave way, and he slipped back over the edge and out of sight. Steve watched in a fascinated horror as the man disappeared from view, his eyes only seeing the shining metal, as his gaze came down to around level.
The knife was sliding over the gravel, and Steve dove for it. His outstretched fingers touched the point of the bade as it slipped away from under them. In a cloud of dust and gravel the knife followed its owner onto the rocks below, and into oblivion.
Steve stood; only then did they look at each other.
Sarah's eyes opened wide, âSteve. Your neck?â she murmured as she cupped her hand to her mouth stifling any further sound. Puzzled at her reaction he put his hand to his neck. It felt wet, as he took it slowly away, he saw the blood covering his fingers. Mesmerized he stared at the red liquid dripping from his hand to the ground, not quite sure what to do.
Sarah crossed the few paces to him; then pulling his shirt from his shorts she tore at the front, ripping a large piece of material from his body.
